In the novel The Great Gatsy, F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author, uses many symbols throughout the book. The book uses patterns and the scenes throughout the book have various connections to each other. The colors that he employs in the book, such as gray, can signify numerous things. One might say that it describes the polluted town illustrated in the book, while others can define the use of the color gray in a completely different way. Some consider that since the color gray is the shade between white and black it can be used to portray the difference between New York City and East Egg and West Egg. In the beginning of the novel (chapter 3) gray is used in the same sentence when Nick, the narrator, is describing Jordan’s qualities in a negative way. He sees in her that she has no plans for her life and also realizes that she has a mustache on her upper lip when she plays tennis.

“Her gray, sun-strained eyes stared straight ahead, but she had deliberately shifted our relations, and for a moment I thought I loved her. But I am slow-thinking and full of interior rules that act as brakes on my desires, and I knew that first I had to get myself definitely out of that tangle back home. I’d been writing letters once a week and signing them: “Love, Nick,” and all I could think of was how, when that certain girl played tennis, a faint mustache of perspiration appeared on her upper lip."
"He smiled understandingly—much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced—or seemed to face—the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor." chapter 3

chapter 5 - green

when gatsby is showing people what his house features, it starts to rain. From his house he points out to Daisy that her green light by her dock is visible when its not raining.

“If it wasn’t for the mist we could see your home across the bay,” said Gatsby. “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.”

I consider that since the color gray is the shade between white and black it can be used to portray the difference between New York City and East Egg and West Egg.

In the begging of the novel (chapter 1) gray is used to describe someone’s eyes, in a negative way.

the color gray in the book symbolizes in between. the color gray is in between the color white and black. the valley of ashes, new york city black . valley of ashes, east egg and west egg white
seems like city is bad but really is other way around. east egg and west egg has adultary .. nick in beginings says city is bad everyones lonely..then says in the end that its good and full of light.
he saw how bad eggs are.

"Her gray sun-strained eyes looked back at me with polite reciprocal curiosity out of a wan, charming, discontented face."

In other scenes, gray is used to show spookiness, just like shown in the quote below again from chapter 2.

"Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak, and comes to rest, and immediately the ash-gray men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud, which screens their obscure operations from your sight."

"It was a few days before the Fourth of July, and a gray, scrawny Italian child was setting torpedoes in a row along the railroad track."

In the chapters to come (chapter 4) gray soon shifts towards the color white and is portrayed as a fine color.

"But I can still read the gray names, and they will give you a better impression than my generalities of those who accepted Gatsby’s hospitality and paid him the subtle tribute of knowing nothing whatever about him."

Towards the end of the story the color gray is exposed to be a light color. In the quote below gray is associated with a “sweet fever” and “rose petals”. Now it is clearly seen that the perspective of the color gray changes throughout the book and is not only used to describe the darkness that lies between the two regions.

"At the gray tea hour there were always rooms that throbbed incessantly with this low, sweet fever, while fresh faces drifted here and there like rose petals blown by the sad horns around the floor."

daisy - on page 13, daisy is described as charming and as a singer. her voice is described as full of money. this connects to the setting due to the fact that daisy's neighborhood is very rich. the west and east egg are considered wealthy.

Some may call silver the future rust.
I say silver could be used for torturing lust.
Swords, knives, shields, guns.
Spoons, forks, watches, coins.
For the good,or for the bad.
making peace after countries are in a tie,
all the way to cutting a piece of pie.

On September 29, 1920 Adolf Hitler made his first public political speech. The speech took place in his home country of Austria. This crucial speech led him to perform numerous speeches in the future. The main idea of the speech was to unify Germany by liquidating (exterminate) people such as blacks, Gypsies, mentally disabled, physically disabled and homosexuals. but worst of all, the speech was primarily against the existince of Jews.

DANGER!! There is a consequence if you trespass. God will become so angry at you that He will not hesitate to bring waters upon you. The waters will become higher and higher and consume you. After it has consumed you it will take you away from my property and and God will deal with the rest of your corpse.

BEWARE OF FIRE!! Trespassing will raise up fires that will consume you and melt you to the bone in approximately eight seconds. After the fire cools down, spiders will be let free by the owner of this house, and drink the unevaporated blood that was left behind from you putrified body, so that no soul will know that you have violated the tresspasing law and you will feel delighted to know that no one knows that you are rotting in hell.
